Meet the team …
Dorian trained at Mayfair Performing Arts Academy where he studied jazz, modern, ballet, and contemporary. While he had no former training, his passion for combining his urban surroundings with his love of dance led him to the realm of hip-hop.
Dorion is an intern at Gallery 37′s Hip-Hop Culture/Dance Ensemble, and was the last choreographer to work with and establish a piece for Maggie Daley and her annual After School Matters Gala. An active performer, he’s danced/choreographed for shows at Lollapalooza (2011), the Taste of Chicago (West Side Story), and the Museum of Contemporary art (Step Afrika!). He’s also performed with gospel singers Mary-Mary at the Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights, and choreographed the promotional Chicago tour of “Happy Feet Two”. Dorion currently teaches Hip-hop Cardio at MaZi, where we mix fitness with our passion to dance.
Marissa brings over 15 years of gymnastics and figure skating training to MaZi. She first started going to MaZi in 2009 after moving to Wicker Park and fell in love with the unique, fun and challenging classes. Marissa has seen the results of MaZi in her own life since she first started taking classes. She began teaching Ballerina Bum Bootcamp at MaZi in March 2012. Outside of MaZi, Marissa works as a school social worker at an elementary school on the south side of Chicago and lives with her husband, James, and adorable dog, Toby.
After receiving a BFA in Dance Performance/Choreography and a BA in English from Elon University, Jess moved to Chicago where she has been performing and teaching ever since. Jess is Ballerina Bum and NETA certified and loves the fast paced, high energy workouts MaZi provides.
When not teaching at MaZi, Jess is a professional free-lance dancer, performing for Chicago groups and independent choreographers alike such as Chicago Dance Crash, Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, Paige Cunningham Dances, and Kaitlin Webster choreography. Jess is thrilled to have found a home that combines her technical ballet training with inspiring, strengthening fitness classes.
An alumni of Western Michigan University, Kathryn has trained extensively in jazz, modern, and ballet technique, as well as studying kinesiology and pilates. During her time in Michigan, Kathryn worked with world-renound choreographers such as Arturo Fernandez of LINES Ballet and Jon Lehrer, founder of LehrerDance. She has also choreographed for competitive dance teams. An active member of the Chicago dance community, she can be seen currently moving and collaborating with Project Bound: A Limiting Value and Salty Lark Dance. She is very excited to be a part of the MaZi team, bringing her passion for movement and her love of a good sweat session together to kick some Ballerina Bum!
Molly is a certified Ballerina Bum trainer, is NETA certified, a professional dancer with 10+ years of dance training, performing, and teaching experience. She has choreographed for Illinois State Championships, for Concert Dance Company, University of Kansas, Kansas City, and now for MaZi Dance Chicago!
Kiley has 10 years of studio training in tap, jazz, and ballet dance. She continued dancing with her high school pom team and then as a member of the University of Notre Dame Pom Squad from 2004 to 2008. A native of suburban Detroit, Kiley moved to Chicago in 2008 after graduating with a degree in architecture from The University of Notre Dame.
Shortly after moving she discovered MaZi Dance Fitness and immediately feel in love. She is now an architect by day and a WERQ Dance Fitness instructor by night. Kiley has been teaching at MaZi since September of 2010 and has been WERQ certified since March 2011. She also holds a Primary Group Fitness Certification through AFAA. Kiley loves sharing her passion for dance fitness at MaZi, it is the highlight of her week!
Shelley started dancing when she was four years old and she hasn’t stopped moving since. Over the years, she has trained in a variety of styles including: ballet, pointe, jazz, and tap. She also studied Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai kickboxing and brings both dance experience as well as a martial arts background to the MaZi program.
Shelley holds a BA from the University of Illinois, manages the central North American territory for a global technology company, and is focused on working, living and achieving success through creative thinking and positive interaction. Her style is fast-paced and high-energy.
Liz graduated from Elon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography. While there, she trained in ballet, somatic theories, modern, and jazz. In North Carolina, Liz performed professionally with Terranova Dance Theatre. In 2012, Liz had the opportunity to travel to Jerusalem, Israel where she studied gaga dance and performed throughout the country with the Jerusalem Academy Dance Ensemble. Liz has danced professionally with Chicago Repertory Ballet, the Civic Ballet of Chicago, and is currently a company member with Elements Contemporary Ballet.
Liz joined the Mazi team in 2013. She teaches Ballerina Bum Bootcamp, Body, Cardio Barre, and her favorite Ballerina Fight Club.
Sara grew up dancing in the suburbs of Chicago. She has trained in modern, hip hop, and ballet and was a member of her high school pom squad. While getting her Bachelor’s Degree at Indiana University Sara minored in contemporary dance and taught hip hop fitness classes.
Sara began taking classes at Mazi in 2011 and was instantly hooked. A year later Sara received her group fitness instructor certification through NETA and joined the Mazi team. Sara teaches Zi-Cardio and B-girl Hip Hop and choreographs for both. Sara is also a certified WERQ instructor. Outside of Mazi, Sara is a licensed clinical social worker and works in the child welfare system.
Stacy received studio training in various styles of dance in Enterprise, AL since the age of 3. Once in high school, she performed with the Enterprise High School Danceline, which featured jazz, lyrical, kickline technique and skills. Additionally, she received the honor of Dancer All-Star among the team. Stacy also featured these dance skills by performing with the Enterprise High School Winterguard, to which they took first place in their division and were among the top groups in the world. Stacy performed with the Auburn University Marching Band Danceline.
Shortly after moving to Chicago, Stacy discovered MaZi on the opening night of their first studio and has been a part of the studio since 2009. She can be seen in promotional pictures and videos for MaZi and has been both a choreographer and performer in their various performances with Mazi Dance Chicago (MDC). Additionally, she has performed with Through the Body Company and at the 2014 Carnival Choreographer’s Ball with Paulette Azizian and Dana Rosenthal. Stacy has also been active in coordinating The Art in Motion Gala with MaZi’s The Gift of Movement program. She is excited to join the instructor team and looks forward to sharing her love of music and dance with others.
Karen has been dancing since she was seven years old. She studied ballet and jazz. She is so grateful for the opportunity Mazi has given her to continue dancing. She teaches Zi Cardio and is more than happy to help others keep dancing.
When she is not in the studio, Karen works as an environmental educator and has a Masters degree in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan.
Mallory has over 20 years of dance training and technique including tap, jazz, ballet, modern, and hip hop. She currently dances and choreographs for MaZi Dance Chicago. She attended The Ohio State University where she took classes in the dance department in pursuit of a dance minor. She went on to complete her MA in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling at Columbia College Chicago where she continued to dance and choreograph, and pursues to bring the psychotherapeutic use of dance to an array of populations.
She has performed and competed in numerous competitions including Dance Master’s of America, and across the Ohio and greater Chicago area. She also helped to facilitate the MaZi Gift of Movement Program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
